Andrew Cox
Andrew retired after 33 years in the Public Service of Canada.
Unjust/Wrongful Dismissal:
He spent his last seventeen years working as an Inspector and Labour Affairs Officer for Employment and Skills Development Canada in the Labour Program Branch. He conducted thorough investigations into complaints of violations of the Canada Labour Code. Complaints of Unjust Dismissal filed under the Code were to be dealt with through mediation. Andrew took an educational approach to mediation and was known among his colleagues and others as a fountain of relevant case law and legislation to help the parties understand their positions. Andrew has over 180 Unjust Dismissal mediations under his belt with industry sectors such as banking, First Nations, transportation, telecommunications, among others.
Grievances:
Prior to Andrew's time with the Federal Labour Program, Andrew served as a shop steward for the Union and as a manager for the employer. In both of these roles, Andrew came to understand the union-employer relationship and the grievance process. Andrew’s knowledge of case law developed in the federal labour program has also given him an excellent understanding of progressive discipline.
Mediation Expertise:
Andrew has been mediating unjust dismissal complaints as a solo mediator since 2009. Andrew co-developed and delivered in-house mediation training. In addition, he was a resource for other federal regions in mediation. Andrew has conducted mediations where both, only one, or neither party was represented by legal counsel. He completed the ADR, Advanced ADR and Applied ADR Workshops offered by the University of Windsor, Faculty of Law and the Stitt Feld Handy Group.
